Financial Dos and Don\u2019ts: Do gather all financial records.<\/h2>\n<p>Gathering important documents is a voluminous and time consuming task, however, it is necessary for a few different reasons when one is getting a divorce.\u00a0 It provides you and your lawyer with a complete financial picture.\u00a0 It is also necessary for purposes of discovery during the divorce.\u00a0 Gather the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Auto registrations<\/li>\n<li>Credit card statement<\/li>\n<li>Financial statements<\/li>\n<li>Information on all bank accounts<\/li>\n<li>Insurance policies<\/li>\n<li>Loan applications<\/li>\n<li>Loan documents<\/li>\n<li>Real estate deeds<\/li>\n<li>Records that verify premarital property<\/li>\n<li>Records that verify separately held property, such as an inheritance<\/li>\n<li>Retirement accounts<\/li>\n<li>Brokerage statements<\/li>\n<li>Tax returns<\/li>\n<li>Trusts<\/li>\n<li>Wills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2. Financial Dos and Don\u2019ts: Do pull a credit report.<\/h2>\n<p>Pulling your credit report gives you more than your credit score.\u00a0 It also provides a complete picture of money owed in your name.\u00a0 A credit report can call your attention to any debt you may have overlooked.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Financial Dos and Don\u2019ts: Do consider working with a financial planner.<\/h2>\n<p>As your attorney and your spouse\u2019s attorney work to come up with a fair and equitable division of property, consider working with a financial planner.\u00a0 Many family law attorneys have relationships with financial professionals, such as accountants and financial planners.\u00a0 It is important to have a clear picture of your current financial relationship, as well as your retirement needs.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Financial Dos and Don\u2019ts: Don\u2019t insist on keeping the house at all costs.<\/h2>\n<p>Many people naturally have a desire to stay in the marital home.\u00a0 Keeping the house may provide stability for the children.\u00a0 It may offer comfort to the spouse that stays.\u00a0 Many people say their home has sentimental value.\u00a0 However, often times, keeping the house is not in a person\u2019s best financial interests.\u00a0 The cost of owning a home doesn\u2019t just include paying the monthly mortgage.\u00a0 It also includes insurance, upkeep, and property taxes.\u00a0 Not all of these costs can be controlled.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Financial Dos and Don\u2019ts: Don\u2019t forget about the cost of health insurance.<\/h2>\n<p>When determining the fairness of any settlement, don\u2019t forget the cost of health insurance.\u00a0 While married, many couples rely on one person\u2019s health care benefits from their job.\u00a0 Options after a divorce include the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) provisions.\u00a0 However, sometimes the state health insurance exchange under the Affordable Care Act offers a better solution.<\/p>\n<h2>8.
